The National Registration and Accreditation Scheme (the National Scheme) regulates more than 800,000 registered health practitioners and over 180,000 registered students across 16 health professions. 15 health profession boards and the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra) work together to deliver the National Scheme.

One vacancy for a community member has arisen on the Victorian Board of the Medical Board of Australia (State Board).

We are seeking an individual with an ability and interest to contribute to the regulatory work of the State Board. Community members will have strong community connections to bring a public/lay perspective.

Position details: State Boards work in partnership with Ahpra to make registration and notification (complaint) decisions about individual practitioners, based on national policies and standards set by the Medical Board of Australia.

Committee membership: The role may include membership of a registration, notifications and an immediate action committee. Members may also be appointed to a national committee.

Location: State Board meetings are held in person at the Ahpra office in Melbourne and some board and committee meetings will be held online via ZOOM.

Time commitment: At least one to two days per month, in addition to any travel time to and from meetings.

Term of appointment: Appointments are made by the Minister for Health in Victoria and are for up to three years, with eligibility for reappointment.

Remuneration: Full daily fee: Member - $691; Chair - $845. Half daily fee: Member - $345; Chair - $422. Quarter daily fee: Member - $173; Chair - $212. Government employees are bound by their employer policy regarding payment.

Eligibility: To be eligible for appointment as a community member, applicants must not be currently registered, or have ever previously been registered as a medical practitioner. It is expected that applicants reside in the state in Victoria.

Training and development: Orientation program and ongoing training is provided. Participation at conferences or planning days may be required.

Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people are warmly encouraged to apply, as are people from rural or regional areas in Victoria.

Ahpra’s current COVID-19 Vaccination Policy requires all staff and statutory appointees to provide evidence of vaccination (or medical exemption) prior to visiting an Ahpra office.
