Second call for applications: International qualified nurse and midwife examination committees

Following an initial recruitment campaign late last year, the Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Committee (NMAC) is calling for applications from people with specific areas of experience for appointment to the following examination committees:

  • Internationally Qualified Nurse Examinations Committee (IQNEC), and
  • Internationally Qualified Midwife Examinations Committee (IQMEC).

Applicants can seek appointment to one or both committees.

The NMAC oversees the pre-registration assessment of the knowledge, clinical skills and professional attributes of internationally qualified nurses and midwives wanting to register in Australia. The pre-registration assessment process includes multiple-choice question (MCQ) examinations and objective structured clinical examinations (OSCE). There are separate examinations for internationally qualified registered nurses (IQRN), internationally qualified midwives (IQM) and internationally qualified enrolled nurses (IQEN).

The NMAC established the IQNEC and IQMEC to help the NMAC oversee the examination stages of the pre-registration assessment. These Committees are part of NMAC’s arrangements to ensure the OBAs reflect good assessment practice and examination governance.

The Committees operate within a policy framework and are accountable to NMAC and their work is important in managing risks related to the OBA by facilitating:

  • the reliability and validity of examination tools and processes
  • the transparency and defensibility of examination results, and
  • the consistency across examination sessions.

The Committees do this by providing subject matter expertise and working with Ahpra in a range of areas. The core areas are moderation and ratification of results and giving advice on examination content (including OSCE scenario selection).

Following an initial recruitment campaign late last year, NMAC is seeking applications from:

  • registered nurses with knowledge of contemporary clinical nursing practice within the Australian health care system
  • registered midwives with knowledge of contemporary clinical midwifery practice within the Australian health care system
  • people with experience in training and/or evaluation of OSCE examiners, preferably in a regulatory context
  • people who have successfully completed the OBA for IQRN, IQM or IQEN in the past five years.

It is desirable that applicants have skills, knowledge and experience in at least one other area listed in the Committees’ Terms of Reference.

The National Scheme has an important role in ensuring the development of a culturally safe and respectful health workforce that is responsive to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples health and contributes to the elimination of racism in the provision of health services.

To achieve this, we have committed to increasing Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander leadership and voices on the Ahpra Board and warmly invite Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples to apply.

Applications will be assessed by a selection advisory panel and appointments will be for a three-year term, with eligibility for reappointment.
