The National Registration and Accreditation Scheme (the National Scheme) regulates more than 875,000 registered health practitioners and over 180,000 registered students across 16 health professions. 15 health profession boards and the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra) work together to deliver the National Scheme.

Vacancies for community members in Australian Capital Territory, Queensland and Northern Territory are arising on the State and Territory Boards of the Medical Board of Australia

Our community members are key to making decisions that put community and public safety first. They are active and engaged health consumers or advocates with lived experience and strong community connections who can represent the needs, perspectives and expectations of the community.

Position details: The State and Territory Boards work in partnership with Ahpra to make notifications and registration decisions about individual practitioners, based on national policies and standards set by the Medical Board of Australia. We are seeking individuals with an ability and interest to contribute to the regulatory work of the State and Territory Boards.

Committee membership: Committee membership will vary. The roles may include membership of a notifications and registration committee. Members may also have the opportunity to be appointed to national committees.

Location: Meeting attendance is flexible. Some meetings are held in person in the relevant Ahpra office and some meetings will be held online via Microsoft Teams.

Time commitment: Time commitment will vary. Approximately two to four days per month, in addition to any travel time to and from meetings.

Term of appointment: Appointments are made by the Minister for Health in the relevant jurisdiction and are for up to three years, with eligibility for reappointment. Positions commence in late 2025/early 2026.

Remuneration: Full daily fee: Member - $736; Chair - $896. Half daily fee: Member - $368; Chair - $448. Quarter daily fee: Member - $184; Chair - $224. Government employees are bound by their employer policy regarding payment.

Eligibility: To be eligible for appointment as a community member, applicants must not be currently registered, or have ever previously been registered as a medical practitioner. For community member roles, preference will be given to applicants who are not a registered health practitioner in any health profession (in any country) and can demonstrate their ability to provide a community voice to the work of the Board. It is expected that applicants reside in the jurisdiction in which they are applying for appointment. Employees and contractors for Ahpra are not eligible for these positions.

Training and development: A comprehensive orientation program and ongoing training is provided. Participation at conferences or planning days may be required. All members must attend cultural safety training delivered by Ahpra.

Our commitment: The National Scheme has an important role in ensuring the development of a culturally safe and respectful health workforce that is responsive to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples health and contributes to the elimination of racism in the provision of health services.

We are committed to increasing diversity and social inclusion. Applications are strongly encouraged from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, multicultural communities, different age groups, people who identify with LGBTIQA+ communities, people with a disability and those who live and/or practise in rural and regional areas.
