The National Registration and Accreditation Scheme regulates more than 740,000 registered health practitioners and over 180,000 registered students across 16 health professions. It also accredits over 740 approved programs of study delivered by over 330 education providers. 15 health profession boards (National Boards) and the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra) work together to deliver the National Scheme.

The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia’s (NMBA) primary role is to protect the public particularly through setting standards, codes and guidelines to guide nursing and midwifery practice. Ahpra manages the registration and notification processes for registered health practitioners and students. The NMBA’s state and territory boards are delegated functions to make registration and notification decisions about nurses and midwives.

Vacancies are arising on the territory boards in the following jurisdictions:

  • Australian Capital Territory – 1 community member
  • Northern Territory – 2 community members

To be eligible for appointment as a community member, applicants must not be currently registered, or have ever previously been registered as a nurse or midwife. It is expected that applicants reside in the territory in which they are applying for appointment.

Appointments are made by the Minister for Health in each jurisdiction under the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law, as in force in each state and territory. Appointments can be for up to three years, with eligibility for reappointment.
